St. Matthias Recognized as Blue Ribbon School for 2001-2002Only Two Private High Schools in the State Receive This StatusMay 1, 2002 -- St. Matthias High School Victorians have yet another series of accomplishments of which to be proud. Over 6,000 schools nationwide applied for recognition as Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. Only two private high schools in the State of California received the Blue Ribbon status, and St. Matthias was one of those two! Continuing the rich tradition for excellence in education, our school was honored this year by the United States Department of Education and now has the recognition of being known as a nationally recognized Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. "It's a huge honor," said Nancy Coonis, superintendent of secondary schools. "The focus is mainly on student achievement from test scores and other kinds of measures of academic excellence. It's a big boost...because it's national recognition." Current educational methods include encouraging students to create portfolios of their work and St. Matthias High School has embraced this opportunity. Students create ESLR ("Expected Schoolwide Learning Results") portfolios that they must present to panels of community leaders, members of the educational profession, and parents in the month before their intended graduation. This has proven to be a tremendous boost to students' confidence as they approach the end of high school and the beginning of their future educational experiences.
